Gaviidae Commons YMCA Forum

The Douglas Dayton YMCA transformed the downtown Minneapolis Gaviidae Commons from a shopping mall and food court to an active, engaging, YMCA of the Greater Twin Cities branch and office headquarters. The space welcomes members and the public, from the Equity Innovation Center, dedicated to social equity programming, to the Penny George Institute for Well-being – it is truly a YMCA for all.

This ambitious adaptive reuse project positioned in the heart of the business district in Minneapolis achieves a delicate balance honoring the iconic Gaviidae atrium while inserting the distinct brand and activity of the YMCA. A welcoming grand staircase, bridges, and vertical stairs cut through the atrium, allowing members to tell the story of the Y. A lap pool, fitness gym, group exercise studios, and exercise equipment spaces all positioned off the sunbathed atrium have been hailed as a one-of-a-kind fitness experience.

This forum will be presented by: Ariane Laxo, Sophie Kjeldgaard and Aaron Mullins with HGA, Jenae Quarve with iSpace Enviornments and Kerry! Givens with YMCA Twin Cities.
