IIDA Northland Student Design Award
sponsored by Haworth

2010 Student Design Award information

IIDA Northland Chapter with generous sponsorship from Haworth has created a design award for IIDA Northland Students. This award of $3,000 will be given to a student who demonstrates their ability to synthesize the research presented in 4 short white papers from Haworth into: a short written essay, 2-3 sketches and furniture product applications. Students are asked to select a current or past design studio project to use for this scholarship (any project is acceptable but office projects may be the best fit).

Using an existing project allows the student to work with an existing program, client type and culture, as well as some existing drawings to build upon.

IIDA Northland Student Design Award is underwritten by Haworth.

Essay

The student will read the 4 white papers on Organizational Culture from Haworth. The student will then analyze the ideas presented in the white papers with the design project they have selected. This analysis will occur in a 2 -3 page essay. Student should discuss the design project selected (program, site, client culture) and how the ideas in papers can be tested in the design project. What type of organizational culture exists in your project? How do the ideas in the white papers affect space? What changes would you make to your design project to reflect that? The paper should refer to the elements of the drawings and furniture application

Drawings/Images/Sketches

The student will then create 2 -3 sketches demonstrating spatially the ideas described in their essay using the selected design project. The sketches can consists of 3D images, Plans, Sections, Elevations, etc. The student should use the drawing styles that best describe their ideas. Be creative and make sure your images communicate your goals.

Furniture Application

The student is asked to apply their ideas through furniture applications from Haworth. The student should determine what Haworth furniture products support the design project and project program. These furniture selections would incorporate Haworth furniture in different applications to support the design project and the ideas demonstrated in the sketches and essay. This can be 1-2 pages with images and text. Images of workstations typicals can be used from the Haworth website and incorporated into your page layouts.

The student should look at the numerous resources that Haworth provides on their website for information on the furniture selections. The furniture should support their project’s ideas on Organizational Culture and the Competing Values matrix.

The student should reference the Haworth website for ideas and Application Ideas Starter 2009 PDF on the Haworth website.

Best of luck! And remember creativity and design counts!
