"The Power to Thrive" Industry Roundtable

Description:
Our panel discussion will consist of design professionals with a variety of experience and a wealth of knowledge.  We will explore interviewing, firm culture, new directions in design firms and other topics defined by the attendees.  Students and experienced industry professionals will find value in this conversation.  We will explore career building ideas and tomorrow's opportunities.  Our goal is to provide a venue for knowledge sharing, positive and optimistic discussion on the industry as well as a candid discussion of the reality of the profession in today's marketplace.

CID, LEED AP

Jennifer Somers brings nearly 15 years of interior design experience as a senior designer and project manager. Her ability to lead projects, generate and foster client relationships and encourage collaboration among her team make her a strong project leader. Jennifer exudes confidence and her experience brings an acute understanding of the design process. Her portfolio includes a wide variety of projects including corporate office space, healthcare and retail projects.

Her dedication to design and her strong communication skills make
her a valuable team leader throughout all phases of a project, from
programming and schematic design through full construction.

Betsy is passionate about design, and fi rmly believes that good design is good business. Her background in both architecture and interiors allows her to create solutions that transform spaces to achieve the best solutions for her clients.

Throughout her career, she has amassed broad expertise through all project phases. From strategic real estate analysis, programming and space planning to project and construction management, Betsy’s diverse experience translates to a thorough understanding of the entire project process.

Outside the office, Betsy is an adjunct teaching faculty at the University of Minnesota’s School of Design. Here, her outreach to students is helping foster the abilities of a future generation of designers.

Shari Bjork is an interior designer based in Minneapolis and has focused her 17 year career primarily on the workplace environment leading projects regionally and nationally.

In 2003, Shari and her two business partners founded the architectural and interior design firm, Studio Hive Inc., which specializes in the design of corporate, higher education and living environments. Prior to forming Studio Hive, Shari was an associate and senior interior designer with Ellerbe Becket, Inc.

Shari is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin Stout and resides in Minneapolis.

How does an innovative idea become a trend?  How do trends become products for consumers?  In this presentation we explore how trends begin and how to spot them, we’ll take a look at the influences that mold them, and follow examples of trends as they become products.  We will then take a virtual walk through global trade shows from the past two years and discuss color, wood and material tendencies that are important to watch in the near future.

imageGerri Chmiel joined the Formica Corporation in 2001, and is now Senior Design Manager in the Product Development Department.  She is responsible for the High Pressure Laminate and Formica Solid Surface design development in North America and tracks international and domestic design and color trends to aid in the development of innovative design.

Gerri has a Bachelors degree in Interior Design but has worked the past 21 years in product design and development, first as a wallcovering stylist and then in the residential housing industry before coming to Formica.  Her travel in North America and Europe will enlighten you to the latest in design, color and influential trends affecting your markets.
