The mission of the Twin Cities Cristo Rey Jesuit High School/Colin Powell Youth Leadership Center is to raise up a new generation of urban leaders that are excellent: educationally, technically, morally and vocationally. The design team created a place of hope and community that embraced that mission. Designers highlighted the multicultural nature of the Phillips neighborhood and the untraditional education model of Cristo Rey.
The building is divided into thirds — one-third Cristo Rey, one-third Colin Powell and one-third shared space. The goal and the challenge was to bring together five building typologies — a high school, a leadership center, a gymnasium, an auditorium and a library — under one cohesive design. Architecturally, the typologies are tied together by a tall glass atrium which provides natural light, security and a welcoming “wow” factor. The dramatic use of natural light and the art work celebrating diversity sets the tone for the entire facility.
