To walk into McKinney Roe is to step into a sort of fantasy-land in the heart of a concrete jungle; an escape from the harshness, a place filled with authentic and almost opulent finishes, rich fabrics, touches of metallic and forest-like influences, and a towering two-story bar that’s been the stuff of owner Dermot Cowley’s own fantasy since he emmigrated to Minnesota from Ireland nearly 20 years ago.

Just a football’s throw away from the new U.S. Bank stadium, the restaurant needed to be casual enough for fans but sophisticated enough to reach East Town’s burgeoning business community. Shea partnered with Cowley, president of the Twin Cities’ pub empire, “Irish Born Hospitality”, to create a space to serve as the neighborhood’s signature spot for everyday dining and happy hours as well as special occasions and game-day dining. Cowley refers to this as his “legacy restaurant,” named for both his mother and mother-in-law.

McKinney Roe keeps its casual character with curated furniture and comfortable banquettes. Detailed millwork and eclectic chandeliers throughout the space add whimsy and texture. There are surprises and Instagram-worthy elements around every corner, including a trompe l’oeil “secret room” in the elevator floor, domed booths, and forest-inspired wallcoverings. A mezzanine level with a separate bar and dining space is ideal for private events and extra seating. But the restaurant’s showpiece is the grand two-story back bar at its heart, stretching from the floor to the soaring 17-foot ceiling. The liquor shelves are lit all around, giving the bar an ethereal glow, and a spiral staircase crowned by a four-foot chandelier leads to an employee-only catwalk where a massive wine library is stored.
