More about Denise...
Denise fostered her passion for evidence based design practice while completing a Bachelors, Masters, and Doctorate Degrees in Interior Design at Michigan State University. Her contributions to the classroom span over 30 years, first as assistant professor at Miami University, landing at the University of Minnesota in 1990. Denise shares her wisdom in undergraduate and graduate, and doctorate studios, ethics and professional practice courses, emphasizing interior design research methods.
Denise’s contributions to the practice of Interior Design extend far beyond the classroom. She has served on numerous task forces for both NCIDQ and FIDER for over 20 years and is the current IDEC President-Elect, leading the way in design education excellence. As a co-founder of InformeDesign, the first searchable internet database of design and human behavior research, Denise excels at sharing the knowledge and resources that foster enriched design solutions. She has also worked tirelessly to push forward Interior Design Legislation for the practice of Interior Design.
Denise has received numerous awards for her local and national service to the interior design profession. These distinctions include:
- Morse Alumni Distinguished Professor, University of Minnesota
- Admired Design Educator 2009, Design Intelligence
- ASID National 2007 Educator of Distinction
- Louis S. Tregre Award in 2003 from NCIDQ for Outstanding Contributions to the Interior Design Practice

Kelly K. Bauer, FIIDA
Principal

Phoenix, Arizona
Kelly Bauer, along with partner James Richard, AIA founded Richard + Bauer, llc in 1996. The studio based, integrated architectural and interiors practice focus’ primarily on Library Design, Higher Education, Research Facilities, and Public Place design. Her role in the firm is that of design project manager and Interior Designer.
Ms Bauer is an award winning designer with local, regional and national accolades. Her work has been published in Architectural Record, Contract Magazine, House & Garden, and internationally in Verlagshaus Braun 2008, Concept (Korea) 2008. She is Contract Magazine’s “2007 Designer of the Year”. Ms. Bauer is a Fellow of IIDA and serves both on the SW Chapter board and advisory committee for the International Board. She was appointed in 2007 to the adjunct faculty in the Design College at Arizona State University and is an affiliate member of the Arizona Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
Ms Bauer enjoys travel, canyon exploring in the Southwest and photography.
Pam Light, FIIDA

Pam Light, FIIDA, LEED® AP, a Senior Vice President with HOK, is an award-winning interior designer, furniture designer, lecturer and design advocate. Pam's experience includes space planning and design, strategic planning and programming, and sustainable design.
Pam has been actively involved in the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) since 1982. In 2002, she was inducted into the IIDA College of Fellows, the highest honor bestowed by the association. In 2006, Pam was elected as International President for the 2006-07 programming year.
A constant advocate for sustainability in interior architecture, Pam is a member of HOK’s Sustainability Task Force and under her direction, projects such as the Santa Monica City Hall was designed to achieve LEED® certification. Projects to be built to LEED® standards are the 550,000-square-foot Symantec Corporate Headquarters in Culver City, and the Allsteel Showroom and Big Blue Bus Administration and Maintenance Facility, both in Santa Monica.
Pam earned a Bachelor’s Degree in interior/environmental design from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. She serves on the Board of Directors of the Architectural Foundation of Los Angeles. She has also lectured on such topics as sustainability, productivity, CEO expectations, branding, and industry trends; and has been a featured speaker on NPR on topics such as productivity and the power of design.
Iain Thorp
Corporate Design Strategist

Iain C. S. Thorp is the Corporate Design Strategist for Haworth, Inc. based in Holland, Michigan. Prior to this he held the position of Head of Design for Haworth North America. Iain works across disciplines to help create long-term vision for the organization using design methods and expertise to solve complex business and product development problems. He is also responsible for creating and visualizing the near and long-term product design strategy, including the design of future product concepts and applications. Iain graduated with honors in 1991 with a BFA in Industrial Design from Kendall College of Art & Design.
He began his career as a design intern in the Industrial Design Studio at Haworth in 1989 and by 1997 was the Lead Designer for Haworth’s Ideation Group. In 1999 Iain joined IDEO as a senior designer collaborating on projects for Ford, Steelcase and Brunswick among others, then joined the Steelcase Design Studio in 2001. In 2003 he returned to Haworth to lead the design portion of Haworth’s design-centered cultural transformation and manage the internal design studio.
Iain has been recognized with numerous design awards and patents. He spent his formative years in New Zealand and now lives with his wife Brendolyn and three children Esther, Luke and Adrian in West Michigan.
